In this segment we like to take look at possible decks and key cards come October. I like to be as ahead of the curve as I can be and I am an amateur speculator (meaning I have not made money doing it (meaning meaning this the first time I will attempt to speculate for monetary gains)). What we will do is take a look successful cards in the current block constructed format and then add to that M15 staples, in an attempt to be prepared for the coming rotation. As the spoiler season starts I will do weekly updates, as cards can increase or decrease in playability/value. Lets begin shall we?
What is the single most important card type in Magic? Land. You need lands to cast your threats and your answers. Lands can be some the most consistently valuable cards in a block, that is because everyone has to have them. What will the key lands in standard be?
With the shocks rotating the format will slowdown about a turn and a half to two turns. With Standard slowing and the card pool shrinking we will see these land played in every deck. The Scry 1 is deceptively strong. These lands start at $3 and go all the way up to $10, with the current average price at $4.31. NOW is the time to buy in. Whether you are getting your playsets or looking to flip them, come six months from now the average price for these will be $8-$10, effectively doubling. What are the other lands that we need to be prepared for?
These are the Painlands originally printed in Apocalypse. These will be staples of the coming year, but will probably not see any prices over $8, accept for Llanowar Wastes which is currently at $5 and could go as high as $10. As you will see in coming articles, Green and Black will be the strongest colors post rotation, get these now. Anything else?
Out of all the lands post rotation this is the one with the highest ceiling. Standard will be moving back towards three color decks, with the majority of duals and the new trilands coming in to play tapped the format will also slow down. Mana Confluence will be a key card in several decks that want to be a turn ahead. At $11 right now, it will probably spike to around $20 and stabilize there for the majority of the year, but my gut says it will have another large spike towards the end of the year and end really high much like Cavern of Souls did.
